When being asked about independent music, the term “unsigned” is uttered. But the irony of being part of this music scene is that you try not to have its status. Battling to obtain the recognition they believe they deserve by applying efforts and of course, showing their talent to people with good connections. I must say that I have personally heard most of these artists’ material and have thought, “Why do they have to go through so much? These guys need to get discovered, pronto!”
Sadly, not everyone gets to have the same opinion as mine, which explains why they have to keep working for it. Luckily, playing their material would be no work for them at all. Instead, they’d be doing what they have chosen for themselves to do. Considering that the music they play is their passion, frustrations are all covered. But still, help for them is needed, even if the pleasure is already with them in what they do.

It’s no surprise to hear that Memphis is the home of blues, brews, and barbecues. No matter how you stack (or, Stax) it, music roots run deep in this full-of-soul southern city. In fact, you can’t walk down Beale Street without passing a blues bar or barbecue joint within 10 seconds. The list of musicians hailing from this city reads like a who’s who of rhythm, blues, and soul, but it’s the dedication and commitment to the local music scene in modern times that keeps the spirit of soul alive. Music fans flock here every year for many fine festivals, a chance to visit historic Sun Studios, or get their Elvis on at Graceland. Memphis may not be the first city that fans think of when they’re marking down travel destinations, but for this writer’s money, it’s a trip well worth taking more than once to soak in all this traditional city has to offer. Forsaking rhinestones for grittier textures, this “other” Tennessee music capital provides less glitter and more groove.

As I was browsing the internet, I was surprised to see that there are actually Indie Music Awards. I never thought that such awards exist. Just like any other music awards – AMA, Grammy’s and MTV Music Awards – Indie Music Awards give common awards such as Favorite Single of the Year, Favorite Solo Artist of the Year and Favorite International Artist /Group of the Year. One of the music awards that I found was held in Canada. It was called the 7th Annual Independent Music Awards. Here the following artists were recognized for their music: Feist, Alexisonfire and the Arctic Monkeys.

What would the indie music scene offer to its listeners that would be somewhat different from the mainstream form? I am indeed curious, being exposed to what is popular according to the society, what sells, what becomes the standard; it is what we people know?
Is there really a great difference between the indie and mainstream music scene? It is all around us. It invades the globe slowly. Will it turn things upside down? Will it stir revolution to the ears of the people? Will it create change? These are some of the questions that we are still about to unravel. Yes, the scene might have taken domination many years ago but there are still things left under query.

If you want to understand a young American, first to do is to understand indie music. Indie music is the opposite of mainstream music. It invokes a more genuine, unique, and reflective experience of the American youth. A younger American’s iPod is not just a compilation of music that they enjoy and listening to. It is what defines them as a person. The trend is, they look out for the latest hot band and type of music that no one has heard of, so that they can hit it just right before the band becomes big. To the American youth, being a fan of a group or a band before they make it big, is one of the most important things they can do. Because they will be envied by their friends. Indie music is growing more and more each year. Followers comes with it. Indie groups usually holds numerous concerts, this gives their followers the opportunity to meet with others and enjoy their company.

Indie musicians were not spewed out already formed and rocking out. They all began as kid with dreams; dreams of making their very own music and finding people who appreciate them. As a youngster exploring one’s musicality and that right niche in the industry, it is important to open oneself up to different genres and styles in order to find your own. Don’t be afraid to imitate bands that you like, for this is the first step to finding that right genre for your talents and abilities. Of course, as you further mature as a musician, you should find your very own voice and style.

Personally, I like to think that there is already a sure possibility of each independent artist’s success. But with what is happening in the music industry today, just like in the recent news, many recording bars are closing already. This is because they can’t afford to remain open because of the difficulties in selling albums. This is the sad reality of today. I think we cannot accuse anyone because of this. So, the best thing we can do is to help each other. As independent artist, try to connect and coordinate with co-indie artist. Eventually, each of you will shine!
